The finish line....the Erie Canal Completed! We had to lock through what is called "The Flight of Five" and final locks just before Waterford. They come one right after the other (within a span of 2 miles) with a combined lift (or drop) of 169 feet.
We stopped for two days, in Waterford, NY (where the Erie Canal meets the Hudson River), to clean up our cabin of Canal "stuff", charts and grit, and a little rest and provisioning. We hooked up with cruisers, Daniel Frigon and Nycole Dube from Montreal and Harry Baker and Linda MacDonald also from Canada. Harry is very experienced in cruising the East Coast, and was willing to share his knowledge with us. We met at Daniel and Nycole's boat with Harry giving us chart reviews, anchorages and marinas to look into along the Hudson River as well as the Jersey Shore. It was very valuable information. Suzanne took copious notes. Harry made the Hudson and Jersey Shore seem so easy. Later we all walked up to town for dinner together.
We did a little provisioning at the local market. The grocery store lets you take the shopping cart to the marina so you don't have to carry your groceries. We walked the bridge over the Hudson River with our shopping cart.
"Accept the challenges, so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory."
